All wheel drive meets all-powerful 2.0 TSI

Form an orderly queue, please: Volkswagen has released images and details of the latest generation Golf R.

Unsurprisingly, they’re labelling it “the most powerful model to date”, thanks to its 2.0 4-cylinder turbo motor that puts out 235kW and 400Nm of torque. It pushes the new Golf R from 0-100km/h in just 4,7 seconds, and on to a top speed of 270km/h with the optional R-Performance Package.

Drive is to all four wheels, with torque vectoring a standard part of the setup. This allows power to be sent to individual rear wheels, improving cornering and traction. A Vehicle Dynamics Manager networks the 4MOTION all-wheel drive controls with other vehicle drive systems, including the electronic front differential and Dynamic Chassis Control, allowing for more precise handling and feel.

No word yet on when the new Golf R will be available in SA, but the suggest you don’t wait to put your name down at your nearest dealership - they’re not going to hang around on the showroom floor!
