BMW unveils its local 4 Series Coupé lineup
The new and opinion-dividing BMW 4 Series has been launched in South Africa.
The initial model line-up is made of up the rear-wheel drive 420i and 420d, which are offered with the M Sport package. For now, the top of the 4 Series pile is the M440i xDrive, offered as an M Performance model, with intelligent all-wheel drive as an option.
Described as having a “sharper” character then the previous generation, the new 4 Series is lower, and has a weight-optimised chassis that includes 50:50 distribution. And it also features “that” kidney grille - bigger, vertical and there, says BMW, because of the engine’s high cooling requirements. The lighting is all-round LED, with the option for adaptive LED headlights with BMW Laserlight.
Standard interior features include a touch screen of up to 10.25-inches for the infotainment system (which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto), 3-zone climate control, new sports leather steering wheel and newly developed sports seats. Rear passengers share a two-seat setup. Optionally available are a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, head-up display, sliding glass roof, ambient lighting, and auxiliary heating controlled by smartphone or BMW Display Key. The standard park distance control can be boosted by Parking Assistant, which now includes a reversing function for automated parking entry and exit.
Safety kit for the new 4 Series include front collision warning with brake input, and Lane Departure Warning with active steering assistance.
The 420i is powered by a 2.0 4-cylinder petrol with 135 kW / 300 Nm, while the 420d gets a 2.0 4-cylinder diesel with 140 kW / 400 Nm.
The M440i xDrive’s 3.0 in-line 6-cylinder has an output of 275kW and 500Nm. Its 0-100km/h time 4,5 seconds, with top speed pegged at 250km/h.
All models have an eight-speed Steptronic gearbox.
