New compact SUV slots in above the GLA

Just when you thought Mercedes-Benz had themselves a big enough range of SUVs, they add another one: the GLB.

Size-wise, the GLB is 14cm longer than the new B Class, and its 1,65m height gives it class-leading head room for driver and front passenger. It’s available with an optional third row of seats: folding out of the boot floor, the third row features cupholders and USB charging ports for each occupant, and Mercedes-Benz claims the arrangement offers good comfort for passengers up to 1,68m tall.

Other interior highlights include the MBUX infotainment system with customisable graphics, head-up display and optional augmented-reality navigation. Safety systems include camera- and radar-based systems that allow a measure of semi-autonomous driving.

The GLB range in South Africa will initially consist of the GLB 250 petrol and GLB 220 d 4MATIC diesel. Both models are fitted with an 8-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system features fully variable torque delivery; the Off-road Engineering Package is included as standard, and includes a drive mode geared for rough terrain driving.
