Resurrecting the company's proud performance heritage

Mention the words “performance division” and most people automatically think AMG, M or RS, and consequently, beefed up versions of petrol-powered models. But, similar to the goings on in motor manufacturing today, the focus is shifting towards electric power. Volvo has Polestar, its all-electric sportscar division, and now Peugeot have stepped into the high-performance electrification arena.

Peugeot Sport Engineered has been created by the French company to build electrified vehicles that pack a bit of punch, and their first model has been unveiled: the 508 Peugeot Sport Engineered. We’re going to refer to it as the 508PSE, because typing “Peugeot Sport Engineered” every time is tiresome.

Available as a fastback and SW, the 508PSE is the company’s most powerful production model. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain combines an internal combustion engine and two electric motors: total output is 268kW / 520Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 5.2 seconds and a limited top speed of 250km/h. With one electric motor at either end of the car, the 508PSE delivers all-wheel traction.

Adaptive damping is standard; it also has a lower driving position than the standard 508, with a widened front and rear track, and 20-inch wheels.

While Peugeot will be introducing the new 208 and Landtrek bakkie to SA in 2021, there’s no word yet on plans for the 508.
